It's time for Poplar to get its place in the sun. These shavings came from a particularly vibrant board, with purples, browns, green and white.

Cherry Dining Table.
Half Scale. Designing at the bench, with no plans, is not something I do often. I should, though, it's so satisfying. This quick prototype puts me in the ballpark and gives me immediate feedback on the areas I'd like to change or tweak.

play videoSince I post so many planing videos, I thought I would add the counterpoint to the thin shavings. Here I am quickly removing wood to have the wood grain run parallel to the edge of the board. This will pay off when two boards are edge glued together. The straighter the grain at a seam, the harder it is to discern exactly where the joint is. Tap for sound.

play videoCerusing, final step. There was only one chance to get the middle step on video, and it turns out I didn't actually record me using a squeegee to push the white paste into the pores of the ash. However, here I am using a piece of burlap to remove the excess paste and burnish the surface.

I've just added a new 13000 grit stone to my sharpening lineup. I keep this piece of easily planed, mystery pallet wood to set the blade's adjustment.
